Once a year the Sun comes back to the exact spot it held when you were born. Once a month the Moon does the same. Astrologers freeze the sky at that minute and read it as a chart of its own: a solar return for the year ahead, a lunar return for the month ahead. It is one of the oldest "year ahead" tools there is. The Persian astrologer Abu Ma'shar was writing manuals on it in the 9th century.
The reading rules are simple. Look at what sits on the chart's two main axes, the Ascendant (you, how you show up) and the Midheaven (career, reputation, public standing). Look at what the Sun and Moon are touching, and at any planet doing something unusual at that moment. The closer the contact, the louder the theme.
The first two cases come from astrologer Nick Dagan Best, who presented them on The Astrology Podcast. The third is our own find. We computed every date ourselves.
Uranus, the planet astrologers connect with revolution and upheaval, appears to stop in the sky twice a year before changing direction. For it to stop on your birthday is rare: roughly a once-in-84-years coincidence for any given birth date. When it does, the rule is that Uranus colours your entire year.
Abraham Lincoln, born 12 February. In 1860 Uranus stopped and turned on 11 February, the day before his birthday. That November he was elected president. Five months later the Civil War began.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, born 30 January. In 1941 Uranus stopped and turned on 30 January, his birthday to the day. That December brought Pearl Harbor and a president at war.
Charles de Gaulle, born 22 November. In 1958 Uranus stopped and turned on 22 November, his 68th birthday. A month later France elected him president, and in January he took office as the first president of the new Fifth Republic.

Venus Williams was born with Mars and Saturn side by side in Virgo, a signature of disciplined, grinding effort. That day Mars and Saturn were side by side in Virgo again, 2° apart, sitting on the Jupiter of her birth chart. Jupiter, in her chart, governs the house of siblings. The Sun was crossing her career point, within 1°. And her lunar return, the Moon coming home and resetting her month, arrived the very next morning. The method taught by astrologer Peter Novak notes that strong return charts often "switch on" a day or two early.
King Charles III was born 14 November 1948 at 21:14 in London.
His solar return of November 2021 covers the year running to November 2022. The Sun falls in the 8th house, the part of a chart traditionally tied to death and inheritance, in a near-exact flowing angle to the Ascendant (0.6°). The Moon is rising, read as a year that is emotional, family-centred and deeply personal. Ten months into that year his mother died, and he inherited the throne.
His lunar return of 20 April 2023 came sixteen days before the coronation. His Moon came home about one hour after a solar eclipse, so the chart for his coronation month is a New Moon: Sun and Moon fused, 0.6° apart, gathered at the Ascendant. In the method, a New Moon return means "a pivotal ending or a new beginning," and planets massed at the Ascendant mean "all eyes on you."
Actor Kerry Washington was born 31 January 1977. In 2018 her solar return fell less than three hours before a total lunar eclipse, and that eclipse landed within 2° of the Saturn in her birth chart. Saturn is the planet of fathers, structure and hard facts.

Steve Jobs was born 24 February 1955 at 19:15 in San Francisco. His solar return for February 2006 to February 2007 has Uranus, invention and disruption, in a near-perfect flowing angle to the career point (0.5°), and Jupiter, the planet of growth, inside the career house itself.
On 9 January 2007, inside that solar return year, he walked on stage and introduced the iPhone.
Neil Armstrong's last lunar return before Apollo 11 began on 29 June 1969. Three slow, heavy planets, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto, are bunched in the 9th house, the sector of long journeys. His Moon is locked in a tense square to all three. The method's reading: the journey of a lifetime, and a man who feels very small in front of it. Seventeen days later he launched.
Donald Trump has a recorded birth time (14 June 1946, 10:54, New York). Here is the lunar return in force on each of his three presidential election nights.

In his birth chart Venus rules the career sector. In the two wins, Moon and Venus are side by side. In the loss, they are locked in the hardest possible angle. Same person, same technique, three dated events.
Richard Nixon's lunar return of 3 August 1974. The Moon is rising and in an exact clash with the Midheaven (0.2°): personal vulnerability colliding with public position. Uranus, planet of sudden decisions, squares the Ascendant.
The same chart also holds a generous triangle. Venus and Jupiter are in an exact flowing angle (0.1°), both supporting the Midheaven. The reading: forced out, but landing softly. Nixon resigned six days later and was pardoned within a month.
One detail surprises most people: a solar return is cast for where you are on that birthday, not for where you were born. The same goes for the monthly lunar return. This is how the method taught by Peter Novak casts every return chart, and PathFinder follows it.
The planets are in the same place for everyone on Earth at that minute. What changes with location is the frame around them: the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the twelve houses. Those are exactly the points the reading rules lean on, so every contact a planet makes to them changes too.

This is why some people travel for their birthday, hoping for a better frame for the year. Peter Novak neither criticises nor fully endorses the practice. It is also why PathFinder asks where you live now, and not only where you were born.
Return charts are not reserved for presidents. The two sketches below are illustrations of how the technique is read, not real client cases.
A 34-year-old nurse has a solar return with the Sun and Jupiter in the 9th house. It would be read as a year pulled toward distance: study, travel, a move abroad. If her other indicators agree, that is the year the job offer in another country gets a serious look.
A 41-year-old designer has a lunar return with Saturn exactly on the Midheaven. That covers one month rather than a year: heavier responsibility at work, a deadline that cannot slip. It passes when the Moon comes round again, about 27 days later.
The point of the technique is that scale: a theme for the year, then a theme for each month inside it.
Astrologers have several independent ways of timing a life, each with its own famous cases. These were also discussed on The Astrology Podcast, and we checked the arithmetic.
Annual profections ask which area of life is "up" this year. It is an ancient count: one house of the chart per year of age. Age 25 always lands on the 2nd house, the house of money. Lisa Marie Presley was born with generous Jupiter in that house, and the planet running her 25th year sat in the house of inheritance. On the exact day she turned 25, she inherited the Elvis Presley estate, about $100 million.
Zodiacal releasing marks the chapters of a career. The 2,000-year-old technique divides a life into chapters of fixed length and flags some as "peak" periods. For Robert Downey Jr., the count puts the start of a 20-year peak chapter in August 2008. Iron Man had opened three months earlier, after two decades of a career that nearly collapsed.
Secondary progressions count one day after birth as one year of life. Taylor Swift was born 16 days before Venus stopped and turned in the sky. Sixteen days gives age 16, the months she recorded her debut album. Muhammad Ali was born about 18½ days before Jupiter stopped and turned, which points to the summer of 1960, when he won Olympic gold in Rome. His Venus did the same 36 days after birth, pointing to 1978, the year he lost the heavyweight title and won it back.
Every example above was read after the event, and a single chart read alone can be made to fit many stories. We would rather say that ourselves.
That is why the method taught by Peter Novak, the one PathFinder is built around, refuses to rely on any single technique. It runs seven data sets side by side.

The method's central rule is never to trust one data set on its own. A theme is taken seriously when it shows up in several at once: when the 27-year chart, the yearly chart and the monthly chart point the same way, and the progressions and transits land on the same dates. When they disagree, the method says so. Mixed signals mean mixed conditions, not a cancelled event.
That convergence is what the method's precision rests on. It describes the technique and what practitioners report when independent timing tools agree. It is not a promise from us about your future. PathFinder's job is narrower and checkable: calculate all of these to professional precision, put them side by side, and show you the reasoning. That is twelve timing techniques in total: the seven from Peter Novak's method, tertiary progressions, and four from the Hellenistic tradition, with converse (run backwards) versions of transits, progressions and solar arcs.
